Welcome back young ones!! It’s time to look outside of our great state
and focus on the whole country. Our
great state, in fact, wants to know how much you KNOW about our country’s
history this year so you will be TAKS tested over your knowledge. RELAX!!
It’s not as bad as you think…REALLY!!
You WILL be ready and you will have FUN getting ready – promise! I’ve found that 8th
graders appreciate knowing WHY we are where we are as a nation and how we got
here. It really is a great story and I
so enjoy watching all the light bulbs go off over all of your beautiful noggins!
DAILY
“Current Events” – I
put quotes around this because it may not technically be a CURRENT
event but we are probably discussing the topic CURRENTLY in class
(work with me here…) Again…easy 100’s. Every
Friday bring an article about the topic I assign (most require you to print
off articles from the internet so if you have printer issues, you’ll need to
use the computer lab) glued, taped or stapled in your spiral with a summary
of your article. The summary I’m
looking for should be 3-4 sentences long (and should not be the first 3-4
sentences of the article). It should
demonstrate a clear understanding of the article. This is to say…IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT
THE ARTICLE IS ABOUT, DON’T USE IT. Understand this – if your
current event does not have a summary, is not in your notebook (as in taped,
glued or stapled), or has an incomplete summary, a 50 will be earned.
YOU MUST
FOLLOW ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS TO RECEIVE ALL THE CREDIT!!!
This is a standing due date and you will have 4 days to take care of
it.
If your current event is one day
late (that is, turned in on Monday) a 70 will be earned. Current events will not be accepted after
this except in the case of an absence. ATTENTION!!! CURRENT EVENT ZEROS ARE DETRIMENTAL AND
UNNECESSARY!!! THEY ARE THE EASIEST
100’S YOU CAN MAKE AND REMEMBER, IT TAKES 4 100’S TO BRING A 0 UP TO A
70! DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO AVOID THIS! ASK YOUR PARENTS TO REMIND YOU, PUT
POST-ITS ON YOUR MIRROR TO REMIND YOU...WHATEVER IT TAKES! You will also be learning more about the “outlining” process. During the first semester, you will be
completing an outline of each chapter that I provide by filling in the blanks
and then during the second semester, you will create the outlines for each
chapter on your own. These will also
be daily grades.
LATE WORK AND ABSENCES
It is the responsibility of the
student to find out his/her assignments if absent. Ideally, a parent or friend would pick up a
student’s book to catch up on any reading or work that day, however,
sometimes that isn’t possible. The
number of days you are absent is the number of days you have to turn in your
work. Should you miss a test the make-up
will be given the day you return.
Current events are due every Friday and should you not be here it will
be due the following Monday. An assignment turned in one day late
earns a highest possible grade of 70 Two days late earns highest possible
grade of 50 (w/ exception of current event) TESTS Tests will be given over each
chapter. Most will require short
answer and some require essay. Ya
gotta know your stuff! GRADING PERCENTAGES Tests – 30% Daily – 35% Projects – 35% |
