CHILDREN AT RISK, a nonprofit organization that drives change for children through research, education and influencing public policy, researched and ranked 158 public high schools, 292 middle schools and 807 elementary schools in the nine counties of Greater Dallas. The Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts ranks 6th on the local list and 11th statewide making FWAFA one of the highest-ranked high schools in the state.
"We battle the preconceived notion that because we are a charter school or because we’re fine arts we’re not strong academically when just the opposite is true," Principal Craig Shreckengast said. "We have a high number of students in [Advanced Placement] courses who go on to go to the top colleges in the nation." For four years, CHILDREN AT RISK has been evaluating high schools in the Greater Houston area. For the first time this fall, CHILDREN AT RISK has expanded its school rankings report to include all elementary, middle, and high schools across Texas. This report has served as a guide to parents and educators alike to understand what works in public education, highlighting which schools serve as models and which schools need improvement. |
